Rivals come in all shapes and sizes. Last night, they came in guise of a Dayton team not nearly ready to compete on the Xavier's level.

Afterglow-noun: a happy feeling that remains after a successful or emotional event, the pleasant remembrance of a past experience, glory, etc.

Sometimes the morning sun seems to dawn a bit brighter, the first cup of Gevalia or Starbucks is just that little bit more loaded with caffeine, pretty girls smile more, grown men laugh, and the world seems like an altogether more pleasant place than it was a couple of days ago. Today, the reason for that feeling is the comprehensive beating Xavier applied to an upstart Dayton squad last night. Sometimes the natural order of things is restored in a moment so beautiful it colors the next day. In one of the program's most storied rivalries, Xavier sent a clear message about who, exactly, is now the power player.

If you looked only at the final score you can be forgiven for thinking that this was a laugher all the way through. The game was tied at two early on and Xavier never trailed after that, but that doesn't exactly tell the correct story of the first half. Xavier needed two big three pointers from Edmond Sumner (14/3/3) to hold off a Flyers squad that seemed to determined to turn this into a game. Xavier went 5-12 from behind the arc in that first half as they tried to keep Dayton at an arm's length.

Both of Sumner's threes pushed the lead back to 10 after Dayton had started to eat into it. The first made the lead 28-18 on the back of a 12-4 run with eight minutes to play. The lead was out to 13 with a minute and a half to go and it looked like Xavier was going to cruise off into the sunset. Defensive lapses prevented that from happening, as did another in a long list of bizarre officiating decisions. Trevon Bluiett (12/5/2) took a three that came off the side of the rim and almost directly into the arms of a hard charging Larry Austin Jr. (0/2/2). Larry carried the ball and some momentum into Scoochie Smith and both players briefly grappled for the ball. By February and in every other season of college basketball ever, play would have continued. Last night, though, Dayton went to the line and made it an eight point game at the half. All of the sudden, it looked like there might be a contest.

The fact that it never did turn into a game was due partially to the balanced nature of the Xavier attack. All five starters and JP Macura (11/1/1) were in double figures but only Bluiett took more than eight shots. He made five of the 11 that he took and the rest of the double figure scorers all only needed eight shots except for JP, who only needed six. A large portion of that was down the never-ending foul parade, but more on that later. Dayton came out of the half with renewed intensity and promptly turned the ball over for a Jalen Reynolds (11/5/1) dunk. Less than a minute later, James Farr (8/7/0) threw one down and Xavier led by ten.

And that would have been a great game. Xavier shakes off the Thanksgiving demons and defeats a heated rival by double digits to win a tournament. Everyone would have been happy. Dayton fans would have rued missed chances (like taking 75 either north or south) and Musketeers fans would have looked at a 6-0 team and begun to think about what could be this year. That didn't happen though, instead Smith cut the lead to eight and then the whirlwind descended.

A 21-0 run doesn't happen all the time. It was Myles Davis (12/6/3) with a layup and then James Farr with another. Then it was Farr again, and Farr again, and Trevon, and Myles, and suddenly it was a rout. The run ended after Sean O'Mara (9/5/0) scored and Kendall Pollard finally got Dayton back on the board. While Dayton was being zipped up to the tune of shooting 0-7/0-4/0-0 Xavier shot 9-14/3-4/0-3 to bury the game. Dayton had tried to keep it close, but the second half was a flexing of muscle. When it mattered, Xavier definitively demonstrated who the better program is.

There was plenty of game time after that, but no actual game. For once, the Musketeers didn't take their collective foot off the gas. They led by 29 at the end of the run, and 29 at the end of the game. Dayton spent the last 12 minutes looking as thoroughly beaten as a team can be. There was no attempt at a fightback, no act of defiance, just an acceptance that they were being destroyed by a squad that was clearly their superior. Dayton may yet earn a spot in the Big East and this great rivalry may (and I think, should) be revived down the line. For now, though, there is no question where the power lies on I-75.

Three Answers:

-Who guards Scoochie Smith? Smith went for 13/7/3 and was the only player on Dayton that Byron Larkin deemed worthy of playing at Xavier's level. (If the rivalry has cooled on the court the last couple of years, it clearly hasn't in Byron's heart. He was at his most unfiltered and entertaining self in the second half). Smith took only four field goals and never really attempted to assert himself on the game. On a day where Xavier players were taking turns throwing hammers, Dayton's star never really responded.

-Can Xavier score inside? How does 46 points in the paint and 56.8% shooting inside the arc sound? Dayton's supposed strength was interior defense, but Xavier eviscerated them inside. Xavier had a 37.1% offensive rebounding rate and had only two shots blocked all game. Xavier didn't just score inside, they dominated.

-Did Xavier's easy wins help? I have no idea. Dayton looked like they had some energy, but just weren't as good a team. Ultimately, this came down to talent, not rest, and Xavier had a lot more of it. The Flyers are a good mid-major that ran into a good high major program. This is what happens.

Today in schadenfreude.

One of the fun things about tearing up somebody who honestly thought they were going to beat you - and that it was going to mean a lot to them - is watching them try to rationalize what just happened. I recognize that this tendency shouldn't be the top line of my emotional resume, but it's there and I suspect I'm not alone it in. Let's see what the Flyers' faithful were feeling after last night's decimation.

I'm going to start here. Like any mouthy little brother that is eventually going to make you put your phone down and re-establish the pecking order, Dayton had plenty to say before the contest started. This is the moment that you silently point back to after the scoreboard goes dark.

Dayton looked like they could possibly make a run as they went into halftime down 43-35 in a half that the Musketeers more or less dominated. If the Flyers could just lock down a bit and get someone like Charles Cooke going from beyond the arc then this could have quickly become a game.

Instead Xavier stepped on the Flyers throats and coasted to a 90-61 tournament title in Disney World. All five of the Musketeers' starting five finished in double-figures, lead by Edmond Sumner with 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Tom Blackburn has a fairly irreverent view on Dayton basketball, but he's also usually spot on. Here he identifies that Xavier was (and is) the much better team and that Dayton has plenty of holes to patch. If you want to read a fairly bitter opposing fan say nice things about Xavier, this is the post for you. If a smattering of profanity and a reference to a grotesque sexual act aren't your cup of tea, steer clear.

A complete team effort for Xavier as they flex their major conference muscle on a familiar foe.

What happened: Xavier 90 - Dayton 61

Wow. With a chance to make a couple of statements at once in taking down an old rival and putting a final nail in the Thanksgiving Curse, Xavier flat-out opened up a can on Dayton this afternoon. Xavier dominated in every phase of the game, flashed depth when confronted with the Ref Show, and overcame a deeply partisan crowd to go home with the AdvoCare Invitational trophy.

In our preview, we identified the freebie war - i.e., getting "free" possessions with offensive rebounding and a positive turnover margin - as a place Xavier could win this game. It came to fruition at game time, with Xavier scoring 27 points off of 22 forced turnovers and getting 17 second-chance points from 13 offensive rebounds. On the other side, Xavier gave up 4 points off of turnovers and 2 second-chance points to Dayton. It was freebie domination.

Xavier's freshman point guard Edmond Sumner was the first among a solid group of scorers for Xavier today, putting up 14/3/3 on 5-8/2-3/2-3 shooting with 3 turnovers. He got caught in some foul trouble that slowed him down in the second half, but he had his full arsenal of skills on display in the first, burying a couple of big-time threes, getting into the defense on the dribble, and keeping the ball moving on the offensive end. X got a good one with Ed.

If Sumner is emblematic of how Xavier basketball keeps pushing forward, Myles Davis is a throwback for the Muskies. No doubt he is a talented player in his own right, but all he does is whatever the team needs. Need some buckets? How about 5-8/2-4/0-0 for 12 points? Need someone to prod the paint and poke holes in the half court defense? Myles did that for 3 assists today. He grabbed 6 boards. He spent the last 8 minutes or so bringing the ball up against pressure. If Coach Mack asked him to jump center, I'll be he would.

The Musketeers' big men could have been a dominant force today, but they were consistently in foul trouble from the word go. Despite that, Jalen had 11/5/1 in just 15 minutes and James Farr contributed 8/7/0 with 3 blocks in 17 minutes. The less said about the officiating the better, but if they are going to continue to call it like they are, it's going to behoove teams to be deep in the paint. There aren't a lot of schools that can match the production of Jalmes Farrnolds in the middle of the floor.

Trevon was quiet tonight for a guy who tied for the team lead in scoring, shooting 5-11/2-7/0-4 on his way to 12/5/2. He was joined in being uncharacteristically poor from the line by JP, who shot 3-6/1-3/4-7 and compiled 11/1/1 while renewing his habit of turning opponents into friends wherever he goes. I guess if there's anything that chaps me about this game, it's that we were bad from the line and left a chance to hang a hundred on Dayton out there.

The last of Xavier's 6 double-digit scorers was Remy Abell, who had 11/2/2. Nothing about his stat line jumps out at you except for the fact that we don't have to draw up plays for him and he went for a silent 4-8/1-2/2-2 shooting performance. He's a huge asset for this team, and I think we may not realize exactly how much he'll be missed when he's gone.

With 18:33 remaining in the game, Scoochie Smith got into the middle and made a layup to cut Xavier's lead to 47-39, prompting Dick Vitale to announce that he didn't think Xavier could put Dayton away. Over the next 6:23, Dayton's offense shot 0-7/0-4/0-0 and committed 5 turnovers while Xavier ripped off a 21-0 run to turn the rest of the game into a coronation. When your defense can completely put the brakes on an opposing attack, you always have the chance to zip someone up. When your offense can reel off 21 points in 6:23 to go along with that, you may have a special team on your hands. I think that might be what we're witnessing with this 2015-2016 Xavier squad. Don't take it from me though...

Well that was fun.

Xavier romped and rolled all over Dayton after a foul-tastic first half. With the win comes the Advocare Invitational championship and a notice to the country that Xavier is for real.

Momentum is everything

This game was pretty close in the first half, but a huge 21-0 run blew the doors wide open for Xavier. Dayton missed a few good chances during that time, but the key was the momentum that Xavier had. Six players scored at least 8+ points this game and James Farr pounded the boards during the 21 point run. It didn't hurt at all that Xavier made three 3-pointers during the streak. Those seven minutes changed the game and Dayton could not recover in time.

Rebound, rebound, rebound

Xavier entered halftime with a 43-35 point lead and rebounding was the difference maker. Both teams shot about the same, 49% for Xavier and 50% for Dayton, but Xavier out rebounded Dayton and had more chances. This theme continued throughout the entire game and became crucial to the 21-point run. Jalen Reynolds, Myles Davis, and James Farr all had 5+ rebounds during the game and 10 different players got in on the action. Rebounds lead to chances, and Xavier got plenty of them.

Ref show

As much fun as tonight's win was, the first half was tough to watch. With over 20 fouls in the first half alone, the game felt as though it was crawling along. Hearing the whistle every 45 seconds got old quickly and it felt like the winning formula was to have Reynolds run towards the basket and get fouled. Hopefully we do not have to see this crew again, because we're running out of hair quickly.

Three Keys

-Win the freebie battle. Second-chances from the glass and turnovers combine to give a team extra possessions or rob them of chances to score. Dayton has done well on the glass but struggled with TO% on both ends. Xavier needs to make the advantage on the glass stick and turn Dayton over.

-Move the ball. Dayton's defense does well when teams try to go right at it. Attacking into the teeth of it yields bad shots, but keeping the ball moving around can end up with open shots from deep. Being disciplined enough to give the ball up and make the defense rotate will pay off in spades for Xavier if they stick to it.

-Play 40 minutes. With the possible exception of the Michigan game, Xavier hasn't faced an opponent that has tested them from wire to wire in a game this season. There's a good chance that Dayton will be that team. If they are, the Muskies will need a complete performance to beat them. If they aren't, it would be kind of fun to play a really solid couple of halves and just bury them.

Hello Dayton, my old friend.

We know each other. We may not personally know each other, you and I, but this is not a new encounter for Xavier and Dayton fans. Since Jimmy Carter was in office, Xavier has not lost to Dayton in Cincinnati. This game is not being played in Cincinnati, though, and it's not being played over the past 35 years. History is why you and I aren't going to be besties; the reasons we're not going to get along today are a lot more immediate.

Here's a little bit of background information on the current iteration of the Musketeers, just to get you started.

Xavier strategy

Xavier is really good at the parts of the offense that don't involve actually scoring the basketball. We are shooting a bit below average from deep and sincerely poorly from inside the arc. It's not a point of pride for us right now. Turnovers haven't been a strength or a weakness, but offensive rebounding has. James Farr and Jalen Reynolds are leading the way, but everyone is doing well on the offensive glass. That's leading to more free throws, which Xavier is making pretty well.

Defense is in flux right now. For years, Xavier has been a man team under Coach Mack, but now the 1-3-1 zone is becoming a bigger part of the defensive game. The man is really susceptible to dribble penetration and eventually openings for jumpers as the defense rotates. The 1-3-1 at least forces the opponent into taking the shots we know they're going to take, so I guess it's a step forward in that regard.

Other things to consider

This game should be on the schedule every year.

Xavier has traditionally been pretty poor on Thanksgiving tournaments, so this final is kind of new ground.

Three players have led the team in scoring, three have led the team in assists, and five have led the team in rebounds in just six games; X is deep and balanced.

National broadcasters have just found out that Bill Murray's son is on staff; have fun hearing that a million times.

Xavier finds itself in an unfamiliar position facing a very familiar foe.

When the field of the AdvoCare Invitational for this year was announced, Xavier fans immediately identified an opportunity to (1) get some big matchups against programs like Wichita State and Notre Dame and (2) possibly take on former conference rival and perennially annoying little brother Dayton in the final game. Wichita State and Notre Dame dropped the ball, but wins against Alabama and USC have X playing for the championship.

Dayton was up 10 with 8 minutes to play in the first round before surrendering a 16-2 run over 5 minutes to put themselves in trouble. They battled back to beat Iowa, then they got some help from the refs down the stretch against a Monmouth team that looked surprisingly sharp to advance to 2-0 on the weekend and 5-0 on the year.

Team Fingerprint

The Flyers win with defense right now. They basically concede the three-point arc, and teams have been scoring pretty well from deep against them. They're not great at forcing turnovers. I highlight their relative weaknesses first because their strengths are so strong. Only five teams are better in two-point field goal defense, they're just outside the top 50 in block% and steal%. Their defensive rebounding isn't elite, but it is very good.

On offense, they are in the top 50 in two-point shooting and focus on working inside the arc. They are an average three-point shooting team. Dayton really excels at offensive rebounding and getting to the line. Their main offensive weak point is ball security, where they rank 291st in the nation in turnover%.

Reserves

Dayton has four players who get significant time off the bench, the lone returner being guard Darrell Davis, whose 6.8 ppg have come much less efficiently than last season, due in large part to his struggles from three point range, where his percentage has dropped from 45 to 25. Ryan Mikesell, on the other hand, has been instant offense from the bench, averaging 6.8 points, but shooting .600/.533/.400 to get them. At 6'7" Mikesell is also a threat on the boards, but only does well at the offensive glass. Behind him in minutes is all around defensive stopper Xeyrius Williams who, despite his 6'8" stature, leads Dayton in steal rate. He gets offensive rebounds well, but only converts 44% from the floor and isn't a threat from deep. Coming in at just over 10 minutes a game is 6'9" Sam Miller who fouled out in back to back games in which he totaled 23 minutes of action. Miller isn't a big contributor on either end of floor, but does give Dayton some size when McElvene has to sit.

Three Questions

-Who guards Scoochie Smith? Also, what kind of grown man goes by Scoochie? More to the point, Smith is the straw that stirs the drink for UD, leading them in assist rate and ORtg. He's not their main scorer, but he is their main offensive threat. Shutting him down would go a long way to derailing UD's offense.

-Can Xavier score inside? Will they even try? This should be a strength against strength matchup, but X has struggled to establish the paint all year. Will they dump it inside the Jalen and James? If so, can those guys make it play?

-Did Xavier's easy wins help? Dayton had to battle for 40 minutes twice in just over 24 hours while Xavier more or less cruised for stretches of both games. Does X come in more rested, or does Dayton come in more sharp?

So I guess we're doing this again.

At 4:30pm tomorrow, the Jimmy Carter Classic will tip off in Orlando in the guise of the championship game of the AdvoCare Invitational. Xavier has handled business against Alabama and USC while Dayton has fought to the wire to take down Iowa and Monmouth. Now fate has once again paired these old conference foes in a game on national television.

Xavier has gotten to this point on the back of basically two things: rebounding and free throws. The Musketeers get a higher percentage of their points from the line than all but 7 teams in the country, and it has been well documented that Xavier has enjoyed a huge rebounding advantage on both ends. If you're the coach, are you designing the lineup to leverage those strengths, or do you take them for granted and try to balance things out with players who can do other things?

Here's the KenPom depth chart to get you started. It should be noted that Pomeroy's depth charts are just built on an algorithm. The reason you see JP listed as a point, for example, is because he gets a good number of assists without turning the ball over much and he's fairly feeble on the defensive glass. Ed, on the other hand, gets shots up, turns the ball over a lot, and rebounds like a small forward. The depth chart isn't perfect, but it gives you a bit of an idea of how Xavier has lined up over the last five games.
