Jalen Reynolds is eating

Villanova didn't have an answer for Jalen in the middle today, and Xavier kept feeding the big man. He ended with 15 and could have had more if he had gotten a few more touches. If Xavier is going to make a run in March, they'll need the combination of Reynolds and Stainbrook to be playing at a high level.

We still can't defend the arc

Come on. It's no secret that Villanova can shoot the ball from deep, but Xavier gave them plenty of opportunities to do just that and you can see what the results were. Defensive rotations were too slow and ball screen defense was borderline embarrassing. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

We still can't close

With ten minutes to play, this was anyone's game. Then Xavier sputtered while Nova put on a run and that was all she wrote. Xavier gave up a 14-2 spurt that ended the game as a contest. That Creighton game is huge, and now Xavier probably needs a Big East tournament game win to feel solid in the field.

Where we talk to our good friends over at VU Hoops about Saturday's game.

Here we are in an interesting spot. Xavier has two more games in the regular season with one against lowly Creighton and the other against the top team in the conference, Villanova. As we all know, our opponent is quite good. Our team is not quite as talented, but the game is at home and you never know what will happen when a Davis goes off. To get us ready for the game we talked to our good friend, Chris Lane over at VU Hoops to help us get ready for the game. Here is what he had to say.

1.) Villanova has been almost unstoppable this season with only two losses. What has been the key to your success?

Depth, depth and more depth. We've reached a point where it almost doesn't matter what lineup is on the floor. Sure, some are better than others as our stats guru Corollary will surely let you know. But to the naked eye, it doesn't matter if Phil Booth or Ryan Arcidiacono is running the point or whether Jay Wright wants to go small-ball or stick with his starting 5. Everybody is producing on both ends of the floor at a really high level.

The thing fans will commonly tell you though is that Wright has stocked the program with team-first guys. The players legitimately do not care about their stats. They just want to win. That really comes through on the court, because guys like Daniel Ochefu and JayVaughn Pinkston may have 'off nights' offensively but they don't let it affect their attitude on the defensive end.

Having Darrun Hilliard in the best stretch of his career hasn't hurt either.

2.) Some brackets have the Wildcats as a 1 seed while others have you at a 2 seed. If Villanova wins the rest of their games, will they get a 1 seed?

I think too much still depends on how the conference tournaments play out, but if Villanova wins out and takes the crown in New York, I think they'll have one of the strongest cases to be a #1 seed outside of Kentucky and whichever of Duke/Virginia wins the ACC. I get that Gonzaga has just the one loss on the road in OT to Arizona, but that schedule was a cakewalk. I'm pretty confident in saying the rest of the top-8 seeds would have goose-egged the WCC too.

At the end of the day, looking at bracket projections, I'm not sure there will be a huge difference in a 1 or a 2 for 'Nova. They should end up in the East, and will likely have either Duke or Virginia as their counterpart at the top of the bracket.

3.) Is Darrun Hilliard the Big East Player of the Year?

I'm obviously biased, but assuming he closes strong, I think so. LaDontae Henton and Kris Dunn both have a good shout but they will take votes away from each other. D'Angelo Harrison has been completely overshadowed by Sir'Dominic Pointer as of late (Pointer by the way, should make All-BIG EAST), and D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera is just kind of...there.
I don't know that Hilliard will get it but he is getting tons of good press at the right time.

4.) How do you think your defense has improved since last year and how do you think that will factor in come the NCAA tournament?

The biggest improvement has been in 3-point defense. Villanova not only is allowing a lower percentage of made shots, but I believe a lower percentage of shots taken from there as well. As the underclassmen have matured and learned the defensive rotations, everything has gotten much tighter. They're still dangerously thin on the frontline since Darryl Reynolds hasn't seen much playing time, so if Ochefu gets in to foul trouble we're looking at Pinkston and Kris Jenkins guarding 7-footers. Not ideal.

The improved 3-point defense should help them avoid the mid-major who goes off syndrome early in the tournament, but the NCAA Tournament is always a crapshoot. So much of it depends on matchups and who is hot. Right now, 'Nova is one of the hottest teams in the country. Hopefully they can sustain it.

5.) Now that the second Big East season is winding down, what are your thoughts on the new-ish league?

I really like how all the coaches go to battle for each other and there is a healthy rivalry between them. That's been huge to help the media realize how good this league is. I still think 10 is a bit on the small side and I'd like to see the league go to 12 teams, but I'm really enjoying the home-and-home aspect and I don't want to lose that. St. Louis feels like a good fit, but I'm still not sure who the 12th team would/could be.

Marquette hiring Wojo really ensured that program won't dip much beyond this season, but DePaul really needs to can Purnell and though the Seton Hall circus is hilarious to watch, I think Willard has to go too. I'm torn on Lavin. He stinks, but he seems to rally his guys when it counts.

6.) Prediction on how this game will go?

Can't lie, I'm a little bit concerned and I think 'Nova is ripe for the upset given Xavier's talent, bubble situation, and the atmosphere in the Cintas Center. Senior Night was so emotional for Hilliard and Pinkston and while the team is 100% locked in, I could see a lapse in focus now that they've clinched a share of the BIG EAST title.
Xavier is so good offensively and while Villanova was back to its best last night defensively, I see this becoming a shootout. I won't pick against my guys, but this should be a good game. 78-76 Villanova escapes late.

Xavier hosts another ranked team with a chance to send a strong message to the Selection Committee.

In some ways, this is the first game between Xavier and Villanova. I know they technically played before, but that game featured a shakeup from Coach Mack that saw two freshmen getting their first collegiate starts and just nine minutes of action for Remy Abell, the team's best defender. The result was an onslaught of three-point baskets from Villanova that began at the tip and carried on every time Xavier threatened to cut it to single digits in the second half.

A month and a half later, Xavier is a modest 7-5 since Coach Mack attempted to light a fire under the team, while Villanova has by and large dispatched every opponent the Big East has thrown at them. The Wildcats have locked up a share of the conference title and a first-round bye in the Big East tournament; they're playing the next two and a half weeks with an eye on seeding come Selection Sunday. Xavier is a fairly solid tournament team right now, but a win over Villanova would go a long way towards making Muskies fans more comfortable when Greg Gumbel starts reading off names.

Team fingerprint:
Let's start with that offense. Your plan against Nova better involve scoring a lot of points, because they're likely going to score a lot of points on you. They lead the Big East in both frequency and accuracy of three-point shooting, assist rate, and free throw rate. They're also second in 2P% and FT%. Their only "weak" points are TO%, where they're 5th, and OReb%, where they're 6th. Considering the ease with which they score the basketball, they probably feel like winning free possessions isn't worth the effort.

About that "scoring a lot of points" plan... Nova also has the league's best defensive efficiency. They're third in the league in forcing turnovers, second in defending inside the arc, and first in preventing three-point attempts and free throw attempts. Their defensive rebounding is mediocre and they don't block a lot of shots. Other than that, good luck.

Reserves:
Josh Hart is a 6'5" forward who averages 9.8/4.5/1.5 on .487/.435/.689 shooting. He loves the corner threes and the right wing, and they love him right back. At 6'6", 240, Kris Jenkins is built like a brick outhouse but rebounds like a much smaller man. He goes for 6.5 and 2.1 a night and is 37-98 from three on the year, mostly from the left side of the floor. Backup combo guard Phil Booth is an excellent finisher and loves to find the top of the key or the right corner to shoot threes.

Three questions:
-How does Xavier defend? The first game didn't really give a solid idea of the matchups involved as Xavier started with an abnormal lineup and Villanova started with a blinding salvo of made baskets. That leaves us to wonder if Darrun Hilliard will be guarded by Trevon Bluiett - upon whom he has the experience advantage - or Remy Abell - upon whom he has the size advantage. Xavier's 1-3-1 is a wrinkle that could solve that, but it could be picked apart by Villanova's ball movement and three-point shooting. There's also the question of which of Xavier's foul-prone power forwards will have to take on Pinkston in the paint.

-How small does Coach Mack go? Villanova gets only 43% of their points on two-point shots, 336th in the nation, and they're not a great offensive rebounding club. It's far more important to have interchangeable players than big ones against the Wildcats; how small will X go, and how long do they run a small lineup?

-Who takes the big shot for Xavier? This one might come down to the wire, and what we saw on Monday against St. John's is not comforting in that regard. Remy Abell wanted it with ten seconds to go, but then he wasn't even on the floor for the final possession. The ball ended up with Myles Davis, but that was more a product of running out of time to pass again than wanting to score the ball. If this team needs a big score late in the game, where is the ball going?

Three keys:
-Win the freebie war. This is kind of key every game, but it's especially vital against an offense as electric as Nova's. Xavier needs to maximize their scoring opportunities by avoiding turnovers and getting offensive boards while diminishing Nova's by turning them over and killing possessions with defensive boards. Simple, but not easy.

-Stay patient on offense. You're not going to match Villanova three-for-three. They are going to have a stretch where they get about nine points from four possessions. Chucking and coming up empty leads to regrets later. Xavier needs to weather the storm by sticking with the plan on the offensive end.

-Good defensive rotations. The temptation against a team like this is to charge down the arc. Villanova knows that, and they are great at making the extra pass. Xavier needs to close out with discipline and recover quickly when the ball moves.

The final home game of the season comes against the best team in the conference. How do you send them out?

Big game. Big, big game. If Xavier wins this, all they have to do is execute against Creighton and an NCAA tournament bid is in the bag. A loss here and suddenly that trip to Omaha looks a lot more frightening, especially with MSG looming on the horizon. Villanova is a good team that can hurt you in a lot of ways; how would you line up the team to combat that?

BOILERPLATE SECTION: everyone jump in with their depth charts in the comments; this is clearly becoming a thing. Be prepared to be respectful in questioning what other people put and in defending what you wrote. For what it's worth, here's some info that might inform your decisions:

By now I'm sure you're aware that Sumner and London are both out for the season.

Brandon Randolph is back healthy, but it was LAJ who got the big reserve PG minutes against St. John's.

James Farr's minutes have been down lately, but he's rebounding like a fiend; do you trust him against Nova's offense?
