If there is one thing that Coach Chris Mack loves to recruit, it’s fast, explosive wing men and guards. Xavier’s recent classes are loaded with guys who want to run, shoot, and play above the rim. Where Xavier hasn’t been deep recently, and has had to increasingly rely on transfers, is down in the blocks. Yesterday, the commitment of Jake Walter was a big step in the direction of correcting that.
Walter comes from Covington Catholic, where he is entering his senior season on the young end of the scale. While this makes him a candidate for a redshirt immediately, Xavier’s need at the position of center and the fact Walter is listed at 7-1, 250 makes him a tempting play as a freshman. Walter is just growing into the game, but has shown enough promise for Scout to list him as Kentucky’s best center despite his averaging only 6.8 points and 6.7 rebounds last season.
