According to this tweet from Jon Rothstein, Xavier is still not only without freshman point guard Edmond Sumner but also no closer to knowing when he is going to be back. Sumner, as you might recall, took an ugly fall in the opening minutes of Xavier's heavy loss to Villanova.
Since losing Sumner, Xavier has gone 2-0 with wins over Butler and St. John's. The Muskies have mainly deputized with Myles Davis and Larry Austin, Jr. who have combined for 14 assists and 9 turnovers during that time. Neither Butler nor St. John's plays a defense that puts a lot of pressure on a ballhandler.
Xavier is without a key element of the offense in Sumner's absence, namely his ability to attack in the full and half court and make defenses adjust on the fly. Larry and Myles have done okay at getting the ball up the court and initiating the offense, but neither is pretending to be a full replacement for Ed.
Xavier is back in action tomorrow with a home date against DePaul, but the trickier fixture may be Saturday's trip to Marquette. Head injuries are difficult to project, but we will keep you posted as soon as any updates on Sumner are available.
