The top 25 college teams as voted on by the coaches dropped today, and once again Xavier isn't even receiving votes. How many times do we have to go through this? Xavier flies under the radar of respect and recognition during the summer only to once again be one of the teams left standing on the second weekend of the tournament while other programs' hopes lay in the ashes. With what Xavier is bringing back from last year's Sweet 16 team, there is no sense in having nobody rate them as one of the top 25 programs in the nation.
And look at some of the teams ranked ahead of them. Ohio State at the top? Weren't they just D'Angelo Russell and defense? I live in Columbus; I can vouch for the fact that not even Ohio State fans were fans of that team.
Alabama? You mean 19-15, beat Appalachian State by one at home, scraped into the NIT Alabama? Unless they signed the entire 2015 recruiting class under the radar, they're not a top team. I love you, Anthony Grant, but I'm just spitting the facts here.
And Auburn? Was this a poll of just SEC coaches? Or did Bruce Pearl's assertion that he ran a clean program at Tennessee (despite the fact that he lost his job for not running a clean program) really hit that hard with the voters? Xavier had to play its worst game of the year to lose to Auburn last season; I doubt enough has changed that they're a top 25 team now.
I don't know what Oregon is doing in there; some sort of reverse east coast bias? I know they were technically a tournament team last year, but Mighty Joe Young used about 60% of their possessions and is now out of eligibility. There is no way they're going anywhere this year.
The coup de gras might well be Florida State. I know they've had some exciting recruiting developments this summer, but they're still a long way from being a power. They barely cracked the KenPom top 100 last season; they're going to make a 75 position jump now? It makes you wonder what sport these coaches are even watching.
I mean, Florida State is more likely to be in the discussion for the football national championship than the basketball one. In fact, you could say that for all these teams. Wait a second...
This is the football poll.
I hate the summer.
