Update: Coach Mack just tweeted that Ed will be released from the hospital and will join the team on its flight home.
Early in the first half against Villanova, Edmond Sumner went up for a fast break bucket. Then this happened:
Sumner was down and not moving while the game stopped. He was eventually able to bend his legs, but he was removed from the arena on a stretcher without ever attempting to stand. He was able to squeeze the fingers of the first responders in the arena.
Sumner was taken to the hospital for further evaluation, including CAT scans. Coach Mack reported post game that Ed was up and moving around but had no recollection of the event. He has a tremendous headache and there is currently no time frame on his release from the hospital or his return.
Coach Mack was clearly shaken up when discussing the event postgame. He called it the scariest thing that has ever happened to him in coaching. It was clear that the Musketeers were also rattled by Sumner's fall as they went down big and never recovered.
Several Muskies tweeted #PrayForEd after the game and we certainly join them in that sentiment. As soon as we know more, we'll pass it along to you.
