Coach Mack confirmed this evening that the injury Xavier Center Matt Stainbrook sustained against Seton Hall was an MCL strain to his left knee. Stainbrook went down after his knee buckled sideways, and Mack's speculation regarding the injury at the time proved correct.
Stainbrook is out for Thursday's season finale against Villanova, who beat Xavier 81-58 at their place back on February 3rd. Freshman F/C Jalen Reynolds will start in Stainbrook's place on Thursday. It will be the first start of Reynolds's college career.
This is obviously not good news for Xavier, but at least now we know what it is. When a player's knee buckles like Stainbrook's did, the worst case scenario is a lot uglier than this. After the Villanova game, Stainbrook will have a week to rest before the Big East Tournament begins
We will be back with more analysis of how this will affect Xavier's strategy against Nova. It should be noted that the Wildcats' unselfishness on offense is more of a factor than any one particular matchup, so Reynolds will be called upon to be active and aware on the back line.
