2014 XU Compares Well with 2012 and 2011 Editions

After a down season in 2013 and an invitation to join the Big East in 2014, I think a comparison to previous XU teams could help with expectations in the postseason. Using Kenpom to make that comparison seems reasonable since it seeks to neutralize or normalize the numbers. Anyway, it's a quick and easy look at 2011-14:

2011 Offense: 41st

2011 Defense: 52nd

2011 Overall: 39th (2nd round, 0-1)

2012 Offense: 67th

2012 Defense: 53rd

2012 Overall: 48th (Sweet 16, 2-1)

2013 Offense: 125th

2013 Defense: 60th

2013 Overall: 77th (no postseason)

2014 Offense: 37th

2014 Defense: 69th

2014 Overall: 42nd

So being somewhere between 2011 and 2012 puts XU in a good spot, actually. It's a stronger team than we might give it credit for. I suggest that the youth on this year's team equates to the derailments the 2012 team had to deal with in season. I don't know if XU can get past U of L to reach the Sweet 16 (not overlooking NCST and SLU), or if 2012's team could have gotten past Duke instead of Lehigh, but this team has all the upside of any team in the last 4 years. Reaching their full potential does depend on the bench coming on strong, well, out of nowhere. For example, this team is much more complete with Myles Davis being his normal self and Farr providing 10 great minutes. Matt Stainbrook is also 50/50. So, there are a lot of ifs. It's a new season, this is a great team, let's make a run with team ball.
